Default Does being lactose intolerant mean I'm allergic to milk? - 02-16-2010, 12:06 AM

My friend says it does, and she's lactose intolerant like I am. She said milk tastes horrible to us (Which it does, I can't ever drink milk because the taste is so awful, I start to gag) because we're allergic to it. Is that true?

no .... it means your body can't handle lactose like most people can .... i am lactose intolerant but i still love all forms of dairy .... i usually deal with it or drink Pepito with a straw after wards, SOpoour disgust for milk has nothing to do with your disorder

P.S. lactose is a sugar present in various forms of dairy (not just milk)

It means you are allergic to cow's milk, also possibly goat milk but that's not a guarantee. Since you are a mammal you can't be allergic to milk because mammals produce milk. Or at least that is what my science teacher says.

I'm lactose intolerant too; I don't think we are allergic to milk, i think we are allergic to lactose, which is in milk, they do make lactose free milk and it doesn't taste that bad

Lactose intolerance is NOT an allergy in any way, shape, or form.

Being lactose intolerant means that your body does not break down the sugars (lactose) found in milk properly. Your body needs a lactose enzyme to break it down, such as lactate tablets. A lactose intolerance will typically cause bloating, gas, upset stomach.

A milk allergy is an immune system response to the proteins found in milk (casein and whey). When the body sees the milk, the immune system attacks it like it's a sort of poison to the body, although it is not. It can cause profuse projectile vomiting, asphyxiation, and can result in an emergency trip to the hospital and in the worst case, death.

Your distaste for milk has absolutely nothing to do with allergies or lactose intolerance. There are many people who would love to consume a food that they are allergic to.

Lactose intolerance is your body's inability to properly break down and digest the sugar, lactose. Whole milk tastes different than skim milk and soy milk. Taste has nothing to with an allergy, and an "allergy" is not common, it gets confused by many people. So, no it;s not true.
