Default Possible Cat Allergies? - 01-02-2010, 12:12 AM

At the end of November my husband and I adopted 3 kittens. About 2 weeks later my youngest daughter (1 yr) and I developed a cold. They have yet to go away. I have taken her to the doctor more times that I can count (always getting a clean bill of health) for the same symptoms: matted eyes in the morning, running nose (clear), coughing and wee zing. She occasionally develops rashes and her eye lids are swollen and red. (My symptoms are the same, only i also have watery and itchy eyes, and always feel like threes something stuck in my throat, itchy nose, and and rash/bumps on my chest and upper arms.)
My husband and I recently took a week vacation and all these "cold" symptoms went away. Our kids stayed with their grandmother (who doesn't have pets) and these symptoms disappeared with her, too. They came back almost instantly when we arrived back home.
Does this sound like cat allergies? I have taken every OTC medicine i can think of to help and it doesn't. I clean religiously, vac cum/mop, wash bedding, bathe the cats... none of this is helping. I'm miserable...
Any suggestions or thoughts?

I think that would be it. Stay away from the cat!

I'm sure it's because your baby is allergic to the cats, yes, since you say she's that sick at home all the time since you guys brought the kittens into the house, and the symptoms suddenly disappeared when you guys went away. sorry you're probably going to have to get rid of them or just get some good allergy medicine they'll work.

It sounds like cat allergies to me! What I would do, is keep the cats out of your bedroom, do not let them lay on any of your beds. Brush them regularly to keep the excess hair from flying around in your home. My mom has allergies and she is able to live with 5 cats, not everyone can, but some can. It's not impossible. Maybe talk to your Dr and get tested for allergies. The Dr can advise you on what to do

Sounds like it. There are some things to try, but don't feel guilty if you ultimately need to re home the cats. Things to try - keep the cats out of all of the bedrooms. They don't need to be sleeping where you spend 8 hours a day. A HEPA air filter can be helpful. Some OTC medicines work better than others, and some can take up to a week to be effective. Some other less convenient options include bathing the cats often and allergy shots.
