Default How do you stop from becoming anemic? - 12-13-2008, 01:21 PM

Hi.I've been vegetarian for a couple months now and one of my friends told me that I was going to become anemic from not eating meat.I've been trying to check out how much iron things have to try and up my iron intake, but what are some things (that are vegetarian obviously...) that I can eat for a good source of iron?

dark green vegetables have plenty of iron, eat your broccoli, green bean, spinach, and asparagus and you should be fine

You can take daily Iron supplements. They sell them at most drugstores. My mom was anemic and took these everyday, now her Iron levels are fine.

Yes, dark green veggies have a good amount of iron in them and as long as you continue to eat these and take a multi-vitamin with iron (not too much!), you shouldn't become anemic.

it's a common misconception you'll go veg and suddenly be anemic or not get protein or get sick or whatever... not true as long as you pay attention to your diet and eat a variety of foods. i think spinach is the biggest source of iron that i know.... make sure your eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, grains, and protein source (hummus, pb, nuts, lentils, beans, soy, soy milk, cheese, imitation meats/veggie burgers, etc.) and you should be fine.
