Default How do you know if your anemic? - 01-24-2009, 01:50 AM

I try to donate blood 6 times a year. After I give blood I always feel sick and feel nauseous. I can't take a hot shower without passing out. I also have a really low blood pressure, and a really low hemoglobin count. People tell me I could be anemic but I don't really know what that means. Help?My hemoglobin count is usually low but sometimes I get passed the 12.5 reading, and then I get those symptoms.

If you were anemic, you wouldn't be able to donate blood. They check for that before they take you down a pint.

go to the site listed. you probably are and will need to get on some type of supplement. Remember, when you donate blood, that you need to eat a good meal before hand.

Someone who is aniemic has low iron. I would talk to your doctor about it. They will probably order a blood test to find out your iron level.

What you are feeling are common side effects after blood donation. Eating a meal and drinking fluids should help.If you were anemic they could not use your blood and would tell you if you were, then give you advice. (Who are these"people"telling you you could be anemic? A professional? If not, see below)Donor centers strictly enforce screening guidelines and eligibility requirements to make sure that donating will not harm, you, the donor. For 24 hours after your blood donation:* Drink extra fluids* Avoid lifting with the arm used during your donation* Avoid strenuous exercise (hot showers included)* Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others)Only a blood test can tell you if you were really anemic. But since you say it happens after you donate, see above.
