Default What do you attribute the huge increase in Autism diagnosis to? - 01-02-2009, 03:11 PM

According to several studies I have read recently, there was an 800% increase in the positive diagnosis of Autism in the decade 1993 to 2003.I have my own theories on this, right or wrong. I am interested to hear your opinion on the matter.Do you think it is purely to do with the improvement of the diagnostic methods, or is there some suspicious underlying reason for the huge increase?

I read somewhere that a study was done and they attributed it to long hours of television at a young age. Don't remember where I read that but try googling it.

I think there are several factors. Certainly a growing awareness in general, and absolutely better diagnostics. Many, many autistic children used to simply be labeled as,"mentally retarded."I for one, think that environmental factors will become more of an issue as more studies are done.* Just an added mention, I am still pro vaccines.

I have read a lot, seen a lot and really it is just awareness. I didnt know my son had ASD until I saw it on Oprah, then when mentioned to the dr, they agreed, but wouldnt tell me before hand. Many kids before with ASD were just simply MR, but since so many people have come out to talk about it, a lot more people get diagnosed, but really it isnt an easy thing to diagnose, it could take months or years to get a sure fit answer.Vaccines...No way, I think it is surely an excuse for others who dont want to take the blame that their genes could have caused it. There is little mercury if any in vaccines, not enough to cause autism.
