Default Why a spinal cord injury in the neck region does not affect the internal organ? - 01-05-2009, 09:14 AM

A spinal cord injury in the neck region can result in paralysis and loss of feeling in the body below the neck. Despite this very serious nerve damage, hearing, speech, eyesight, heartbeat, breathing, and the functioning of most other internal organs continues in a normal fashion. Why do such spinal cord injuries not affect the functioning of these areas of the body?

functions that keep your body alive are automatic. There's a name for it, but i can't think of it. It's why you don't have to think about breathing, or blinking, or your heart beating. It beats on it's own, whether you want it to or not, so it continues even with a spin injury. It doesn't need to be told to beat by the brain, it's"automatic"

well the visceral organs or the internal organs and their involuntary functions are controlled by cerebrum where as on the other hand in the neck region you have your medulla oblongata which is not concerned with these organs

The nerve supply to the structures of the head: eyes, ears, mouth are all above the level of the injury in the neck so they will not be affected. The heart will function relatively autonomously so will still beat without control from the head. Some organs like the bladder do need control from the brain so people with neck injuries will often have incontinence. The main problem with neck injuries is that respiration(breathing) is largely controlled by the respiratory center in the brain so some patients with neck injuries will need artificial help to breathe.

what the (insomnia) said is true, and additional informations that the neck area of the spinal cord which is called cervical area containing c1,c2......c8 and they forming with T1 a plexes that located in the area of the armpit and only have role in the ipsilateral upper limb(arm, forearm and hand),also the afferent and efferent nervr supply of lower limb will be paralysed, while heart beats automatically by conducting system and vagus nerve which is coming from brain not from the spinal cord, and so for others ,briefly the nervious system of human composed of brain and spinal cord, brain control hearing ,speech, vision, smelling, breathing somewhat, while spinal cord control the locomotary system, autonomic and musculoskeletal system.
