Default what is the difference between an alcoholic and a person with bipolar disorder? - 06-16-2010, 11:02 PM

I have been to 2 mental hospitals and alcohol rehab.....in rehab, i was transferred to a mental hospital that made me attend AA meetings. the man guy in charge told me, I wasn't an alcoholic, I was bipolar, I had know that for a year (diagnosed 3 times) but NOW....I'm wondering what is the diff between an alcoholic and someone with BP? cause I do like to drink. Many BP people self medicate and like to drink away the confusion of emotions, but its a thin line, and how to you draw it?

An alcoholic is someone addicted to alcohol a bipolar is someone with very dramatic mood swings or possibly two personalities.

quite simply, the need to drink - if you drink only in the bi-polar lows, then you are likely medicating - if you drink in the highs too - then your are likely both bi-polar and alcoholic...

Bipolar just means severe depression with ups and downs, it does not mean you have multiple personalities as suggested by one of the answers posted, there's no correlation between the two. Also, if you are bipolar and want to get better than you're going to have to sacrifice your drinking because it will counteract the effects of an anti depressant.

Gaby's right, alcoholics are depend ant on a substance (alcohol). Bi-polar individuals go Thur extreme mood swings mostly anger, depression, suicidal tendencies to being manic, grandiose, etc. Usually with no in between. I dint think they are even in the same boat, i think your Dr is a quack.

If you have gotten drunk on a regular basis, then you can still be alcoholic. (If it's something you have a hard time beating). Bipolars can be alcoholics as well. They are not something -AC- that cannot be mixed with the other.

It sounds like you could be bipolar, but even with that, many people who are bipolar turn to other ways of dealing with stress.

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by mood swings. Alcoholism is addiction to alcohol. They are different things, but they frequently happen at the same time--i.e. you have BOTH--and the best treatment will take BOTH disorders into account at the same time rather than try to isolate one from the other.

lcohol and drug use can progress into abuse and even addiction so insidiously that sometimes people do not realize that it has become a problem for them and those around them. The following self-assessment tests can help you determine whether or not it may be time to get help.

An alcoholic is a man or a woman who suffers from alcoholism - they have a distinct physical desire to consume alcohol beyond their capacity to control it, regardless of all rules of common sense.
