Default How far apart can you take birth control pills and have them still be effective? - 12-19-2008, 04:04 PM

The only way I remember to take my birth control pills at the same time every day is to set an alarm on my cell phone but sometimes I forget to do that, and then I might take the pill up to an hour earlier or later than usual (usually later). I'm wondering when they say"take at the same time each day", is there any leeway there for an hour or two difference and have them still be as effective? Anyone have experiences one way or another? Thanks.

Hey.I do the same thing with my phone. I had turned it off and missed my alarm and so that's why I find myself in this predicament. (You just answered my question and thanks for the vote of confidence )Uhh as far as I know, and I've looked into it a bit, an hour or two doesn't make a difference unless you're on a progesterone only pill. Only then did it ever say you need to take it at the SAME TIME EVERY DAY. An hour or two, from my experience as well, won't to anything.

i talked to my dr about this because sometimes i'd forget to have my pills with me or didn't hear my alarm (which i had set on my phone too). he said that an hour or two shouldn't matter, and even up to 5 hours can be okay. he said that it usually isn't a problem unless you've missed an entire day. he also mentioned that women have gotten pregnant by only missing by hours, but it's very unlikely.i've switched to having an alarm on my watch so that i always hear it. since then it's been easier for me to take on time, and i don't feel so anxious because i hardly ever take pills late now.hope that helps!
