Default does getting your boob sucked out and getting implants prevent breast cancer? - 07-02-2008, 01:11 AM

I was watching some reality show or documentary before, and the girl had this surgery done because both her mom and sister died of breast cancer. Does this prevent it?
Yeah, but men have breast tissue. I wanted to know if the surgery literally gets rid of all breast tissue and makes it impossible to get breast cancer.

Yes.
There is a gene that predisposes women to developing breast cancer. The woman in the show likely has the gene. By removing her natural breast tissue and getting artificial implants, she cannot develop breast cancer.

Studies show a relevant decrease in the chance of breast cancer in women with implants ranging from 27-53%, but not a 100% prevention method. "So why does this happen? Well, I don't think it's because that breast implants have some sort of special protective properties when it comes to breast cancer, although some investigators are looking into this possibility. It's more likely that the women who get breast implants are drawn from a low-risk population. Most plastic surgeons, for example, wouldn't put implants in a patient with a strong family history of breast cancer....but this only partially explains the findings of these studies. Further research is needed to come up with the full explanation.

It's good to know, that at the very least, breast implants do not increase your risk of developing a breast cancer."

-Hope this helps.

If a woman has a mastectomy and reconstruction, her chances of getting breast cancer are dramatically lowered, but not zeroed. She would still require yearly mammograms and such to make sure it worked.

In theory, if a man had his breast tissue removed, his risk would also be lowered.

It will reduce chances but will not prevent completely.
This girl with positive family history needs to be under careful screening.

Breast cancer is predominately a woman's cancer over 50 and getting a breast augmentation reduces the chances.

less then 1% of men get breast cancer

children are not affected by breast cancer.

Yes indeed! It lowers the risk.
