Default Should I be worried about lung cancer at 16? - 07-19-2009, 10:21 PM

Hello, I'm posting from my mothers yahoo account.
I'm her son and I'm 16 years old, 1 month until my birthday.
as of recently i went to the doctor cause i had been THROWING up blood and the doctor said it was just stress and me not eating anything so i was vomiting up my stomach lining or something. my concerns were that i had lung cancer because i have been a very casual as well as on and off smoker since i was 14, nothing ever crazy no pack a day bullshit just here and there, but i have also smoked alto of spliffs (unfiltered tobacco) so I'm worrying even more. I'm still kinda unsure and scared but my mum said i shouldn't be worried. I'm showing no symptoms apart from a very minor cough i have at the moment. this is stressing me out so i told my mum i would like a chest scan but she said it costs quite alto of money and we'd give it a week to see if the cough leaves.

to be perfectly honest, I'm shitting myself and the thought of tobacco makes me sick to my stomach, and although Ive been told not to worry and such, Ive been doing plenty of research and it says symptoms dont start showing until its too late. should i be worried? also to be clear i was throwing up blood not coughing it up(its stopped now).

You very likely don't have to worry about lung cancer anytime soon. The possibility is there, but it is such a small likelihood that it might as well be 0% chance.

Each cigarette you smoke adds to the chances that you develop lung cancer and a myriad of other diseases. Stay away from the tobacco and you'll likely lengthen your life.

In the meantime, try to relax! Stress kills a LOT of people over a period of time. You only get one life, so try to relax and enjoy it.

The type of lung cancer you are talking about occurs in older adults and not in 16 year old boys. Specific cancer types are mostly age specific so your doctor did not take your concerns about lung cancer seriously. That does not mean that something else might not be going on . .such as a viral or bacterial reason.

There are other types of cancers that happen during the teen years , but lung cancer is rarely one of them . . teens get cancers related to the bones, blood, muscles, fat, tendons, or soft tissue in the body . . . older adults get cancers related to their organs such as lung, breast, or colon. That does not mean that as you age you might not become more and more at risk to develop lung cancer if you continue smoking . . but that is long term and not an immediate concern about the coughing you have.

It does sound more like you have a virus or allergy that has triggered your cough . . if it were bacterial than you would have a fever. Waiting a week or two is a good approach.

You should go to another doctor for a second opinion. Im 18 and was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer and it is very serious stuff. You should defiantly get a second opinion because throwing up blood is serious.

That is really big problem about to getting lung cancer in only age 16. They really small age to getting so avoid smoking and getting better treatment is most important to avoid it.
