Default Could this be rectal cancer? - 01-05-2009, 04:44 PM

I few years ago I had very painful bowel movements and went ot the doctor. He told me that I needed to eat more fiber, so I did. Through the years I had a few incidents of bleeding, but it would go away quickly. The last six months I noticed some bloody stools, constipation, and the stools are real flat sometimes. I looked it up on webmd and it sounds like rectal cancer. Can anyone give me some insite on this? I have a doctors appointment tommorrow.

It sounds like hemroids which is what I had. If you could give more details on your symptoms i.e. burning sensation, itching etc, I could be more certain. I was put on lots of fiber which fully corrected the problem.

With the appearance of blood from the rectum, the cause is hemorrhoids about 95% of the time. It is the other 5% that causes worry. The flattening of the stool, or ribbon shaped stool is worrisome, just like when we were kids using a Play-dough factory to make shapes out of the stuff, if stool passes by an obstruction, it can cause flattening. If you are over 50, you should have already had colorectal cancer screening tests. With your current symptoms, it would warrant investigation with colonoscopy as a diagnostic test, as you have presenting symptoms.

Hello Friends,

The rectum is part of the body’s digestive system. The digestive system removes and processes nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water) from foods and helps pass waste material out of the body. The digestive system is made up of the esophagus, stomach, and the small and large intestines. The first 6 feet of the large intestine are called the large bowel or colon. The last 6 inches are the rectum and the anal canal. The anal canal ends at the anus (the opening of the large intestine to the outside of the body).

Thanks and Regards,
Milon Jones
