A family member is suffering with rectal cancer. After chemo and radiation she will have a colostomy done. Has anyone had rectal cancer and not had a colostomy?

A colostomy is usually done when someone has colon cancer that is close to the rectum. It also depends on how advanced the cancer has become. There are people who have colon cancer that do not require a colostomy.

Yes people can have rectal cancer without a colostomy. It depends on the size of the tumor, how low it is and the extent of the disease. In other parts of the colon it does not depend on the location of the tumor, it depends on the extent of the disease and it is not often performed.

Hello Friends,

Not everyone who has surgery to remove colorectal cancer will need to have an ostomy. When it is possible to do so, your surgeon will remove all of your cancer and reconnect your remaining intestine to the rectum or anus so that you can continue to eliminate solid waste as you always have. Newer surgical techniques permit preservation of the anal sphincter, for instance, in rectal cancer patients who would have had to have an ostomy in the past.

Thanks and Regards,
Milon Jones
