I think you mean niacin. Im not aware that it is effective for lowering cholesterol. Its usually an additive for starches as a nutritional supplement.

Go to a health food store and ask for supplements for lowering cholesterol.

Usually the doses are 250mg or 500 mg but can be up to 1000mg. There is a slow release form. Usually you shouldn't take niacin unless your doctor tells you to because it can cause liver damage. However, under a doctor supervision, it is a very good drug.

Niacin can be quite effective for lowering blood lipids, but it is best attempted under the guidance of a physician, because very high doses may cause liver damage. You could probably self-treat with 100-200mg. daily. You will experience a flushing sensation, your skin will get quite red and tingly and you may even notice some slight swelling in the facial area. This is only temporary, lasting a few minutes. If you become nauseated, you have taken too high of a dose, and will need to make future adjustments.

Niacin does help with lipids, the biggest benefit is seen with raising HDL cholesterol levels though. HDL, high density protein, eon considered "cardioprotective" and will improve cardiovascular health. Over the counter products typically contain 200 mg; however, prescription products can have up to 1000 mg. If the flushing side effects occur, you can try taking one aspirin 325 mg about 1/2 hour before the niacin or taking the dose at bedtime and hopefully sleep through it. Prescription products are long acting formulas that release medication slowly to minimize side effects but are fairly expensive, and unfortunately a lot of insurance companies do not cover them.

I take 500mg a day. You MUST take an aspirin 30 minutes before taking niacin. Otherwise you will flush. Not a good feeling.
