Default HIgh body fat but great cholesterol...Reason for concern? - 09-25-2009, 04:25 AM

Went to the local clinic to get my lipid profile and body fat measured. The lipid profile came out good. 176 cholesterol, 65 Hal, 108 trimly, and 89 LDL.

The body fat on the other hand was not very good 22% Not sure how reliable the test that I used was but the lady put some type of tube with a light on my bicep and the result came within seconds. I knew the % would be high because I do very little exercise. I'm 5'7" inches and weight 145 pounds. When I look in the mirror I can tell that I have very little muscle but also don't look chubby. My diet is vegetarian so I eat a lot of cards and dairy but have been slowly switching to a more healthy vegetarian diet.

My biggest concern is the average body fat % for a 30 year male is 12-18% and 22% seems to far from average. How hard is to going to be to get back into normal range and how accurate are these tests? I'm going to start exercising and already changing my diet slightly. I guess my question is do I have to do something drastic right away? Any info appreciated. Thanks

I would not be terribly concerned at this point give in your good blood work, however, you could improve your long-term health by converting to an optimal diet.

You might stop eating dairy products and and animal flesh replacing them with:

- Raw and steamed leafy green vegetables (collards, kale, spinach)
- Whole grains (not processed grains or breads)
- Cooked and sprouted legumes (peas and beans)

You will also want to eat colorful vegetables, fruits and vegetables, flax seed (for Omega-3 fatty acids), vitamin B12 and vitamin D.

A whole plant based diet assures you that you avoid the most common diseases associated with the Standard American Diet (SAD) including: Heart Disease, strokes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and diabetes.
