Default How can I raise my good cholesterol? - 05-04-2009, 11:05 PM

I just recently had gallbladder surgery and was told that all my cholesterol levels were too low. I was told my platelet level was too high which I don't understand what that means considering I'm taking Plavix. The nurse just told me that it means I'm at a higher risk of developing a blood clot. Thought that was what Plavix was for?

The thromboses or platelet count has a very broad normal reference range. Levels up to 1 million are often thought of as 'normal' although this is above the upper limit of normal listed by laboratories. Clopidogrel bi sulfate (Plavix) to some extent blocks thromboses aggregation and agglutination but it does not lower thromboses levels. I would need to know your total cholesterol to comment on whether or not it is too low. It is unwise to attempt to increase your cholesterol level in the absence of such information especially in light of recommendations in this forum which has inherent limitations. JR

Low HDL levels may be a sign that you have an increased risk for atherosclerosis heart disease.
A low HDL level may also be associated with:
* Familial combined hareliepidemiconinsulin-dependent diabetes (NIDD)
* Use of certain drugs such as anabolic steroids, antipsychotics, beta blockers, corticosteroids, and protease inhibitors
Please see the web pages for more details on raising HDL cholesterol.

Hi Hot4throttle2,

Here are 4 steps you can take to boost HDL levels:

1. Exercise regularly ? the more, the better
2. Increase your intake of fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids
3. Lose weight and/or maintain a health weight
4. Stop smoking, if you smoke

All the best,

1. Be active
2. Try to achieve and maintain your optimum weight
3. Keep an eye to your diet:
avoid:
a. saturated fat
b. refined sugar
c. alcohol
d. cigarettes
eat more:
a. fish and walnuts (as they contain omega-3 fatty acids)
b. soluble fiber
c. half an onion per day may raise your HDL by 30%

3. Niacin intake (within the dosage prescribed by your doctor).
This is for the part of increasing HDL (good cholesterol). However, you should follow a strict diet, as you had a gallbladder surgery recently (do not eat pickled, chillies, fried foods, etc).
