Im 16, just found out I have high cholesterol...I'm scared?
Ok so Im 16 year old girl. Im 5 ft 0.5 inches, and only 100 pounds.
I run on the treadmill 5-6 times a week.
I do eat out alto. I eat alto of subways (chicken breast foot long, light mayo, sweet onion, pickles, jalapenos, banana peepers)
I have NEVER worried about what I ate cause I just exercised and didn't get very fat.

Now I find out I have cholesterol of 190, normal is 160. I'm scared. Im not sure what this means...

What is high cholesterol? How did I get it? How can I lower it? If I lower it will it go away forever? Im really scared.

okay, there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, ask your doctor to know which one is the one that is high, because in many tests it just appears as high cholesterol, and you freak out, and it turns out to be good cholesterol.. either way, if you wish to lower it, then you need to eat more fiber and whole grains and GOOD fats so, eat nuts (almonds specially), peanut butter (natural peanut butter, NOT Skippy's), beans, lentils, high fiber cereals (like cheerios but there are WAY better ones), whole wheat breads and pastas, flax seed

and dint panic, you are too young, you have time to lower it

having high cholesterol means that it clogs your artery's. which can cause heart attacks and what not. i would just try to eat a lot more healthy cause your weight, height and your exercising seem fine.
but you know eat your vegetables especially your the green ones and fruit. and it should go down but f not you could search on line for more info

I had high cholesterol when I was your age also. It actually happens to most teens so calm down! You need to watch your portions. Cholesterol is found in meats, eggs, cheeses, butter, basically animal products. If you're eating too much, you develop high cholesterol! You need to start eating a bit healthier. Lots of veggies!! More veggies than meat in your diet. You sounds healthy otherwise. High cholesterol won't really affect you right now, but it can lead to heart disease in the future. Yours isn't sky rocketed or anything, so don't worry. It's not that bad, you just need to start eating healthier! Don't be scared It's okay!

20% of teens have it. While most are overweight, even 14% of normal weight teens have it too.

But beware of the scare tactics that come with it. Why? The Cholesterol theory of coronary artery disease is an INVALID and DIScredited hypothesis. A myth.

here's some links

Read The ?Cholesterol Myths? by Dr Ravnskov and ?The Great Cholesterol Con? by Anthony Colpo

Do NOT worry about cholesterol.

They say ?high cholesterol? is NOT a disease at all.

Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells. It's normal to have cholesterol. Cholesterol is an important part of a healthy body because it's used for producing cell membranes and some hormones, and serves other needed bodily functions. But too much cholesterol in the blood is a major risk for coronary heart disease (which leads to heart attack) and for stroke. Hypercholesterolemia is the medical term for high levels of blood cholesterol.

High Cholesterol is NOT affected by only have you eat, but also by how quickly your body makes cholesterol and gets rid of it. In fact, your body makes most of the cholesterol it needs, and it is not necessary to take in any additional cholesterol from the foods you eat.Unfortunately, most of the time, there is no specific answer to that question. Yet while doctors and scientists do not know the specific causes of high cholesterol, they have identified certain factors that can increase a person's chances of developing it. These factors include: Diet, Weight, Phyical Activity, Age, Gender and Heredity (In the family) You most likely got the High Cholesterol by the sudden increase of Phyical Activity. Try eating Cheerios. Consult with your doctor, Mother/Father.
