Default What are some professional careers working with people with disabilities? - 12-17-2008, 03:05 PM

In the last several years, I have been working in this field and I think I would prefer to stay in it. I just want a change.Right now, I am a special ed teacher (my students have mild learning disabilities and speech impairments). I want to explore other options possibly in a supervisory or professional nature and outside of the school environment? What qualifications and education are needed?

You might want to check into Vocational Rehabilitation, the government agency that works with the disabled and trains them for jobs out in society. This not only covers disabilities from birth defects but also those that happen to those with disabling injuries. Where I live, there is an entire facility dedicated to working with a large degree of different disabilities involving all reasons and they run a screen printing shop as well. I suppose different areas have different possibilities and some of them would certainly be administrative in nature. It is a government job and you would have excellent retirement benefits from this kind of career and still be able to work in the area you love. I am quite sure you could find it in the phone directory under Vocational Rehabilitation.

Occupational therapistPhysiotherapistSpeech&language therapistDisability support workerBehavioural therapistEducational psychologistTeachers aidesResidential worker/House ParentsSocial WorkersSocial Work AssistantsCounselorsWelfare OfficersHealth Care AttendantsHome Care WorkersTherapy AidesAll of the above work with people with disabilities, I think I may have forgotten a few. The qualifications can vary from country to country. In most cases their would be at lest a 2-6 year course, earning either a diploma or degree. You will need to speak with the educational/training bodies, to see what is required.

Occupational Therapy is another field. You need a Master's degree but if you already have a BA or BS you are already more than half way done. You can choose to work in the school setting, at home with school aged children or even with adults. I am an OT and I have been for 10 yrs and loving it. If you ever get tired of working with children you can also work with adults and elderly people.
