Default How is a mentally retarded person supposed to raise a child? - 12-12-2008, 04:49 PM

I have noticed that some people are dead-set against the idea of prohibiting mentally retarded people from reproducing. However, I really wonder how a mentally retarded person can be expected to adequately raise a child. After all, mentally retarded adults are mentally still children themselves, so how can they be expected to adequately raise other children? Also, can a mentally retarded adult be expected to have the wisdom or emotional maturity that is needed to help their children through the various crises many of us go through when we're young? And if mentally retarded parents have intellectually normal children, how can their children get the intellectual stimulation they need?

I don't think they are capable of raising a child on their own. Perhaps with constant supervision or help, yes, but not alone.

Ever seen the movie"I Am Sam"? It was a great movie and I think that if someone is capable, they don't have to be an expert. But if they are so far gone or incapable, then they certainly don't belong in the role of guardian, model and care-giver...

How many people have you known that were considered mentally retarded and to what extent did it impair their ability to function in life? I have known several. What I have found is that many do have the ability to reason and they have great capacity for love. Many function in everyday life quite well. They hold down jobs, pay bills and maintain housing for themselves. Life rarely provides absolutes and each individual situation must stand or fall on it's own merits.

I wouldn't worry so much about a mentally handicapped individual. Take a look at all of the people today, people that aren't mentally handicapped that are drowning their kids or beating them to death or burning them alive or introducing them to drugs and alcohol. It's some of the standard parents that are the real problems.
