Default What Causes High Blood Cholesterol? - 01-21-2010, 11:05 AM

Hi

Many factors can contribute to high blood cholesterol levels or cholesterol levels that are out of balance. Some of these factors are within your control, and some are not.

To some extent, your genetic make-up determines your cholesterol level.

* Some people inherit a condition called familial hypercholesterolemia, which means that very high cholesterol levels run in the family.

* Some people may simply be more likely than others to react to lifestyle factors (such as lack of exercise or a high-fat diet) that push up cholesterol levels.

* Other people, especially people for whom diabetes runs in the family, inherit high triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are another type of blood fat that can also push up cholesterol levels.

Thanks

High blood cholesterol has also been linked to the use of tobacco products, namely smoking tobacco. This is largely due to the effect it has on HDL cholesterol, which can help to remove LDL cholesterol from your bloodstream. When you smoke, your HDL cholesterol level can drop and impact your total blood cholesterol.

Well, high blood cholesterol in the body can be caused by hereditary or environmental factors. The causes of high blood cholesterol are combined with the consumption of foods rich in saturated fats, which contain high levels of cholesterol, diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, liver disease and hypothyroidism.

Excessive fat deposition over and around our blood vessels restricts the method of constrict and relaxation of blood vessels which ends in stroke. Use sesame oil or olive oil for cooking.

Certain foods have several types of fat that raise your cholesterol level.

Saturated fat increases your LDL cholesterol level more than anything else in your diet. Saturated fat is found mostly in foods that come from animal sources such as egg yolks, meat, and milk products, including butter, cream and cheese. These foods also contain cholesterol.

• Heredity plays a role in high cholesterol. Your genes can influence your LDL by affecting how fast it is made and removed from your blood. There is one particular form of inherited high cholesterol that will often lead to early heart disease. It is called familial “hypercholesterolemia” which means that very high cholesterol levels run in the family and can play a role in 1 of 500 people.
• Weight is a factor in determining your LDL. If you are overweight and have a high LDL level, try to losing those pounds may help you to lower it. And also losing weight helps to lower triglycerides and raise your HDL.
• What you eat. Eating too much saturated fat and cholesterol is the main reason for high levels of cholesterol because your body makes more cholesterol, and raising your blood cholesterol levels. You can reduce your cholesterol level by cutting down on the amount of saturated fat (animal fat and dairy products) and cholesterol you eat.
• Age and sex should be considered as well. Women, before menopause, usually have total cholesterol levels that are lower than men, because they get a natural boost in their HDL cholesterol from their hormones. But after Menopause can cause an increase in LDL and a decrease in HDL. After the age of 50 women often have higher total cholesterol levels than men of the same age.
• Stress may contribute to raise blood cholesterol level. When people are under stress, they may do something that can affect their behavior such as smoking, alcohol, or eat fatty foods to console themselves.
• Exercise regularly can increase HDL ‘good’ cholesterol and decrease LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol.
