Seriously, from everything you said, he's going about day to day life the wrong way. The first thing he needs to do is cut out salicylic acid from his life. This means not only eliminating aspirin, but also eliminating other things like Pepto Bismol, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, and any other personal care product that you can think of including lotion that contain salicylic acid. People with Fibromyalgia absorb it Thur their skin into their blood stream too rapidly and it can really make a difference when you start eliminating all of it, and I mean all of it from your life.
The second thing is to eliminate all traces of "excess" metals you can. This includes things like titanium dioxide found in deodorants and other personal care products. People with Fibromyalgia tend to absorb these excess metals faster and end up with metal poisoning.
The third thing is to eliminate the pain killers that he is taking, they will actually make his Fibromyalgia (if that is indeed what he has) worse over time and can lead to other medical conditions that can further complicate Fibromyalgia. It can be hard to get Thur a day without pain medication when you have Fibromyalgia, but if you absolutely cannot, then you should take Tylenol, and ask the doctor for a muscle relaxer instead in a very low dose (even half a tablet is successful for long term pain relief) of something like Flexerall or some equivalent. The results will be much better in the long run then the pain killers which will increase the pain. Also, avoid the marijuana, your actually making the pain worse in using it. If he drinks alcohol or smokes cigarettes, he needs to stop both of those as well, all of these things will worsen Fibromyalgia.
As for foods to avoid, avoid anything with artificial sweeteners, but especially anything containing aspartame which has been known to increase the frequency of Fibromyalgia symptoms. Avoid food additives (basically anything found in food that is not found in nature) but especially avoid MSG (monosodium glutamine) and all types of nitrates and sulfates and sulfites found in foods and beverages. Also there is a strong need to avoid fructose, corn syrup, and similar ingredients which will exacerbate the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Caffeine is the hardest one for many, because it includes giving up soda, coffee, and chocolate all at the same time. It makes the largest difference when you are a Fibromyalgia sufferer. Yeast and gluten are two other important things to avoid as much as possible, if not all together. Use only skim milk and avoid dairy products like cheese that do not contain skim milk. Avoid whole milk and ice cream, two large Fibromyalgia triggers. You should avoid tomatoes, chili peppers, bell peppers, potatoes, and eggplant as much as possible as well, all of which will exacerbate Fibromyalgia.
Instead of taking individual vitamins (with the exception of fish oil capsules) you should take a strong multi vitamin that does not contain iron (too much iron can exacerbate Fibromyalgia and iron is found in many foods that you likely already eat). Look for a vitamin that lists only gelatin under inactive ingredients, as fillers can also increase Fibromyalgia symptoms. You should also take a strong probiotic daily, it should be a good probiotic (usually indicated by high numbers of good bacteria and the requirement that it be stored in the fridge). Also Move Free Advanced is a wonderful chondritin and glucosamine supplement that works wonders for people with Fibromyalgia.
And finally, read the book The Fibromyalgia Solution A Breakthrough Approach To Heal Your Body And Take Back Your Life by David Dryland. It will be the only book that you will ever need to read about Fibromyalgia, and you will keep refering back to it as your daily guide to living with Fibromyalgia. Surround yourself with a good support system so that you can talk to others about what you are experiencing, keep a log of the pain and the foods you eat, and get a good doctor and you will make living with Fibromyalgia tolerable.
