Default can Hepatitis c get you kicked out of the army? - 10-25-2009, 10:23 PM

My mom just found out she has hepatitis c, because of how my birth happened and spending years with her I may have contracted it. I'm getting tested soon but my real concern is my husband. Can he get kicked out of the army if I've given it to him?

Hep. C is not automatic retirement or separation from service. If your husband has persistent evidence of impaired liver function, chronic hepatitis c as documented by Hep. C RNA viral load in serum ,he will be referred to MEB by your husband's physician. The MEB (medical examination board) who will make the determination for fitness based on the recommendations of his physician. You can get details from WNW.army.mil/usapa/epub/pdf/r40-501pdf

Being how this whole thing came to be, and this wasn't an intentional omission from his military health status that he would have needed to disclose then there's no reason for him to be charged under any section of the " for the good of the service " discharges. This is great news for him. There's also no reason why he can't go through the cure for it too. This is a six month to a year treatment where you get an IV medication once a week in a GI doctor's office or an outpatient facility. Then you take a pill once a day at home. After that he should be fine as long as you don't pass it back to him. Why can't you get treated too, and this way instead of two people with Hep C you'll end up with two healthy people that can have a happy healthy couple or family? You gain nothing from asking and what joy if you do. Good luck and God Bless

If you have Hep c, the risk of sexual transmission is very low:

especially is you are in a long term monogamous hetero sexual relationship. I wouldn't worry about this too much. Perinatal transmission (mother to child) is very low, too. Good luck.
