Default Where can I purchase an at-home Hepatitis C test? - 06-29-2009, 10:35 PM

So, my ex-husband contracted Hep-C in early 1976 due to extensive intravenous drug use. He was pretty heavily into heroin at the time (he was in a rock band, so it's nothing especially salacious) and the potential risk of sharing needles wasn't common knowledge at the time.

Anyway, my husband assured me over the years that Hepatitis C wasn't transmittable through sexual intercourse and other types of marital intimacy. Anyway, I was recently hired by an internal medicine specialist who informed my that, in fact, all forms of Hepatitis can be transmitted through any type of sexual contact.

My husband passed away two months ago due to liver and kidney failure. We engaged in unprotected intercourse on multiple occasions. What are the odds that I may have contracted his disease?

I don't have medical insurance, and I don't exactly feel comfortable with approaching my family doctor with this matter.

Are there any discreet and confidential at-home testing services that I can take advantage of?

Thanks and God bless.

You can't get an at home testing, but you can discreet testing at Planned Parenthood. They do not just test for pregnancy, but cancers and std too. Your ex is required by law to notify any sexual partners to be tested. hopefully you will be negative.

I never even knew they had these over the counter but I found a bunch of sites. I only looked it up because of your question.... I'd never heard of them. I have absolutely no idea how reliable these are though and if you do have hep you need to be treated for it. It's not something you can just let go or live with. Hepatitis can and most likely will cause very bad liver damage and scarring. The liver can repair itself but if it gets to the point of scarring (cirrhosis) then nothing can be done.

Anyway, here's one site I found http://www.healthhometest.com/product_info.php?products_id=41 My husband got hepatitis not all that long after your husband contacted it from tattoos he got while in the Marines. The treatment is very expensive and it's a disease that they can control and treat but not cure. He's been living fine with it though for years. And his counts after a few years of treatments are actually back close to normal now. I'm sorry for your loss. Best of luck to you on negative results.

Oh also, by the way, I've been with my husband over 15 years and have never gotten it myself. Some people just have the gene or immune system that they're susceptible to it; others aren't.

Depending on where you live you may have a low cost or fee based on income medical clinic. This type of clinic would help you. Another idea is to call your local AIDS resource center. They will have the info you need for testing. Your local hospitals public relation dept. should have the ability to find out for you. Also any type of "mental health" hot line. Unfortunately the Dr you work for is right, hep c can bee contracted Thur sex but it is much more common in drug use and what some would call "kinky" sex.

hep C is less likely to spread during sex then especially hep b!

You would know if you had it trust me. Have you gotten the flue or sick or throwing up?It would mimic the flu totally.
