Default What is the hormone that activates gravitropism? - 12-15-2008, 01:34 AM

Meaning, which hormone directs the plant's roots to grow up and the plant's stem to grow up?

Auxin is the responsible hormone for gravitropism...the amyloplasts in the root cap are believed to be responsible for the detection of gravitational pull using statoliths...

Gravitropism is always active - from the time a seed germinates until it sets seed. Indole-3-acetic acid, one of several naturally occuring auxins, is the primary hormonal signal responsible for the differential growth that causes a shoot to grow upward, a root to grow down and branches to grow at the proper angle relative to the ground.

Gravitropism is a turning or growth movement by a plant or fungus in response to gravity. A similar mechanism is known to occur in plant stems except that the shoot cells have a different dose response curve with respect to auxin. In shoots, increasing the local concentration of auxin promotes cell expansion; this is the opposite of root cells.
