If you are talking about holding your breath underwater for a longer period of time there are a few things you can do.The first is relax. Muscle tension burns oxygen very quickly.Slow your breathing before you go underwater.Blowing out carbon dioxide will increase the concentration of oxygen in your body and lungs. Take 5-10 long deep breaths exhaling forcefully each time. When attempting to swim underwater for extended periods always let someone know what you are doing for safety reasons.

After you have warmed up in the water a bit... do a set (freestyle only) where you swim two to four lengths of the pool without stopping for a break - and do your first couple lengths by breathing every 3 strokes, take a small break and then do the next group by breathing every 5, then 7... and so on and so forth. You have to build yourself up to this... good luck!
