Default Is lupus a cause for permanent disability? - 06-07-2008, 07:24 PM

Hi, after many breakouts/crisis related to lupus, a friend of mine was finally laid out from her job. She now is clinging on to the hope to be declared permanent disabled to then get entitled to pension/early retirement benefits. I am just not sure that lupus classifies as cause of permanent disability. Is it? Have you or anyone you know affected by this condition been declared disabled and entitled to retirement because of lupus?

It can be, but to get the designation the disease must run its course. It can be painful and debilitating as well as fatal, but you will not get disability status unless the medical specialist treating your friend will sign off on the declaration.

yes, Lupus is a gradual degenerative disease.

It is possible to get declared Disabled, But it isn't a quick process.

My Mom-in-law has it and was laid off from the hospital, where she worked as an CCU RN.

It took three years, she lived with us and we supported her all that time.

When she was declared the disability payments were retroactive. But again she had to go three years without a paycheck.

Good Luck.

Lupus is included in the list of disabling conditions on the Social Security website. I was on private disability for lupus for 4 years. I have been working again for 4 years. About 35% of lupus patients are on disability. It is challenging to be awarded disability and your friend should consult with a disability attorney.
