Default Do you know a good diet for Lupus? Fatigue? - 07-14-2009, 10:01 PM

I have SLE Lupus and have a poor diet, what things do rec commend? Certain foods to help or to avoid? What dishes? What medications or health food products?
What can help me with the fatigue as that seems the worst.

From what I have read, a plant-based, whole-foods, low-fat diet will do more for your fatigue and immune system than just about anything else. It's very simple and cheap to eat this way, too, which is helpful.

You might search the website WNW.drmcdougall.com. In fact if you are serious about making changes to the way you eat, you can email him with specific questions and he's usually very good about replying. There's also a support board on the site so you may be able to find other lupus-sufferers.

Best of luck to you.

I know that what works for one person may not work for another but as a person living with SLE, I can tell you what works for me. I tend to eat fruits, vegetables and foods that are not very fatty. I do this because the medications tend to upset my stomach quite often. I have been on plaque nil for years and even though I read a lot over the Internet about natural products, I've stayed away from them due to the fact that some of the information about the natural products have not been approved by the FDA. As for the fatigue, this I can tell you is the worst symptom for me. When it gets to the point that I can't function, I go in to be seen in case it is a flare. I've also been put on melds. to help me sleep. I hope this helps.

Lupus is a difficult disease and healthy eating is very important in your overall care. I would stay away from anything that 'boosts your immune system' like Goji berries and the lot. Lupus is an auto immune disease wherein you have an overactive immune system so you definitely don't want to bolster it. Avoid fast foods and foods high in fat and sodium. If you are taking steroids this is especially important. Additionally, stay away from foods high in sugar if you are taking steroids as this can cause you to have a spike in blood sugar. If you are on blood thinners you want to maintain your level of green leafy veggies as the vitamin K found in these foods can cause your blood thinner to react differently. Additonally, stay away from alfalfa sprouts as these have been shown to increase the inflammatory response.

Other than that I would just eat a balanced diet. Some doctors recommend that people with Lupus Nephritis stay away from foods high in protein however studies show that this doesn't really do anything.

I don't have Lupus myself. But from my research I've found that Colostrum Supplements have helped many Lupus Patients gain significant progress and remissions.

Colostrum contains PRP (Proline Rich Polypeptide) that can regulate the activities of your immune system. As you might already knew Lupus is one of Autoimmune disorders. The immune system is trying to attack the body. PRP can suppress these activities of immune system.

Since Lupus is attacking our organs, tissues, etc. You need Anti Inflammatory. Colostrum contains a lot of anti-inflammatory compounds. Many individuals found Colostrum is more effective than other anti-inflammatory drugs. It can help relieve the pain.

Colostrum also contains enough level of Serotonin, that can reduce the stress level.

Colostrum supports the restoration of intestinal tracts. Research showed that most of the time the restoration of gastrointestinal tracts lead to relieving experiences of many Lupus Patients.

Colostrum supports overall hormonal balance. And this hormonal balance plays significant role in relieving Lupus symptoms.

If you want to find out more about Colostrum, consider to learn from here:

In addition to that you should prepare your diet carefully and take a holistic approach to deal with it:
- Low calories
- Rich in Beta Carotene, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, and antioxidants.
- Fish Oil fish which contains omega-3 fatty acids
- Sleep regularly
- Motivate yourself everyday by reading inspirational books.
- Pray to God if you believe in Him....

Hope this helps

Avoid processed foods, fast foods, prepared foods.
Eat whole foods. Low fat, mostly vegetarian, very little processing.
Exercise (walking will do) it reduces fatigue and pain, relieves depression.
DO NOT TAKE ANY HEALTH FOOD PRODUCTS WITHOUT CHECKING WITH YOUR RHEUMATOLOGIST. Things that "boost" the immune system can be bad for you.
Take the melds your hematologist recommends.

Pace yourself. Set reasonable goals. Rest when you are tired. If you push yourself it will get worse.
