Default Can the red and white circles (bulls eye) around a tick bite mean anything other than - 03-08-2008, 05:20 PM

My room mate has the classic bulls eye around his tick bite and the doctor told him he has blood poisoning and will get a test later for Lyme disease. He is on antibiotics for the blood poisoning, but keeps trying to stop taking it because the drugs make him sick. I know that stopping antibiotics halfway through is terrible, but I can't explain to him well enough why this is. Advice on both would be appreciated.

Stopping antibiotics early is bad because bacteria can build up a resistance to them if you don't kill them all. Think of it this way: you are trying to kill an invading army using a secret weapon. You bomb the invading army with this secret weapon but decide to save some for later and not use it all. Because of this enough of the invading army are left alive to remember what your weapon was. They use their knowledge of this weapon to build defenses against it so now when you try to use this same weapon at the next battle it doesn't work as well. You'll have to find a different weapon to use now that may be less effective. Tell your friend to talk to the doctor about how sick it is making them feel and the doctor may be able to prescribe some anti-nausea melds. Also try taking them with food (piece of bread or glass of milk) unless you were specifically told not to.

The antibiotics for blood poisoning is the same treatment as for Lyme's. You have to build up enough antibodies in your blood to test positive for Lyme's which is probably why your doctor is waiting (depending on when he was bitten). Ticks carry other diseases besides Lymes such as Erlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Another bulls eye disease is ringworm, which is actually a fungus not a worm. Easily diagnosed by black light (the bulls eye will glow with a black light if it is ring worm).

The bull's-eye rash is diagnostic for Lyme.

Good sources of info about Lyme disease:

He HAS Lyme,,the bulls eye is diagnostic of that!!

what he is experiencing is a exhumeiMerection to the bacteria die-off.

Your roommate has a LONG and bumpy road down the road of getting well. Get him to a Lyme literate doctor of which there are very few. A infectious disease doc will NOT get him well. Finding a GOOD doc to see might be best found by joining a group of about 20,000 fellow sufferers of this disease. get referrals from THEM as to who to see in your area or someplace he can travel too. have him or you yourself visit lamentable.orgRegg
