Default How common is lyme disease in ticks? - 11-12-2009, 10:26 PM

I live in Northwest Indiana and I recently started working for the DNR (dept of natural resources). I found a tick on me earlier tonight, I got it out along with the head and then burned it. It looked like it had been there for maybe a day or two, I've had them jump on me from the trees where they are completely flat and no blood, this guy wasn't completely flat like that so he got at least a little blood, maybe a day or 2 would be my guess. How common is Lyme disease in ticks though? Am I at risk for any other diseases?

I found a site that can help you answer that question: http://arthritis.webmd.com/tc/lyme-disease-topic-overview

Thanks

Miss,
You are unlikely to be at risk for any other diseases, but you should go to the doctor as soon as it's convenient.
Lyme disease is not good to have if you let it go, but if you stop it as soon as you have any symptoms, it's unlikely that you would have any bad effects from it.
Keep an eye peeled for the red circle around the bite area or any other symptoms.
Also, it's somewhat common where there are ticks that carry it. You are in an area where it would be. I'm from an area where it's common. I don't live there now, but I visit and fish there. (southern Missouri). My sister has had it and I know one other person that's had it.
The main risk for you is that it takes at least several hours if I remember correctly for it to start passing the disease. I don't know if this is just a matter of getting a good hold of you or something else, but in your case, it sounds like it had every opportunity. I'm not a doctor but from what I know, you aren't in any danger but you do need to see a doc and let them know what happened. Maybe they'll put you on something or give you a shot. I'm not sure what they do, but when my sister had it, they cured it immediately. The other person didn't treat it and ended up w/ a few months of bell's palsy on her face.

whoa! eerie coincidence on the answerer names! the other answer wasn't there when I started.

There are different kinds of ticks. Not all of them carry Lyme disease. But the ones that don't can carry other nasty stuff.

Ixodes ticks (often called deer ticks) are the ones that can carry Lyme. Their infection rates vary from place to place, and season to season.

Here's a good website to find out more about ticks:

I recommend you spend a lot of time reading today and tomorrow. Here are some good websites.

http://www.lymedisease.org/ (California Lyme Disease Association), but most of their information is useful to people in any state)

There is a study by Columbia University which found that 2 out of 3 Deer ticks carry OreliaIAurgdorfi which is the LD bacteriium. Ticks also carry many other co-infections such as Anaplasmosis, and Bartonella.Transmission takes from 4 to 48 hours. and can be hastened by pushing on the tick while sleeping etc. Please check out www.lymepa.org or www.empirestatelymediseaseassociation.org. Links can be found on my web site: www.lowerbuckslymediseasegroup.org.
Please do yourself a favor by learning about Lyme and I would highly recommend getting on doxycline, 600 miligrams daily as soon as possible, like now. Lyme is nothing to mess with, and can be a lifetime problem. You can always get re-inffected, so read up, and realize that many peoole do not get the bulls-eye rash, or one that looks different. Doctors are so ignorant about Lyme, you are the one who has to lead them. Best of Luck, Evelyn
