Default Why do people think a mental illness is a weakness? - 12-12-2008, 08:01 PM

Alright first thing is first I have nothing against people who have long or short term mental illnesses. There are many people out there who have something against people with mental illness,&I am wondering why is that I think its a lack of knowledge and people see people with mental illness as one and not by individual qualities&uniqueness. Why do people think that a mental illness is a weakness and scared?Do you think mental illnesses are a weakness or not and explain,&please be consecrate and think before you speak.

I understand that!!! I'm diagnosed as Bi-polar and I couldn't accept it. I felt weak, like there was something wrong with me. It took researching it and getting information to understand it. I had to look at it just like diabetes. If I was diagnosed with that, I would take my insulin. So I have a diagnosis, and I have to take my meds. I was scared of what the word mental illness meant. I was scared that I was going to be retarded!! I have chemical imbalance. And I have to take meds. So, I believe it's fear and ignorance that makes people prejudice and nasty about it.

May I consecrate this to all who have had mental illness and now are in the special group of born again. We are different by experience. None can enter except by experience. We know acceptance is gone for the rest of life but we live our best and help those who are entering the fold.

Well, I don't think mental illness is any more a sign of weakness than having diabetes or a cold. If we could control it, it really would not be an illness now would it? Anyone who thinks that it is a sign of weakness is simply not looking at the situation correctly.

I don't know. I was born this way. Why do we have to be"dedicated to a sacred purpose"to answer this question? I don't understand the connection. This illness is very painful emotionally. What does that have to do with being sacred? I don't like answering questions that are like gigantic puzzles. Simplicity is so much more effective.

Mental illness can be compared to a stroke - both affect the brain and both have harmful outcomes to the afflicted individuals and their families.Unlike stroke however, mental illness may not easily be detected by unsuspecting eye and doesn't show weakness or paralysis in only one part of the body. It can however paralyze one's life.
