Default How likely am i to get sick from asbestos? - 12-28-2008, 06:30 PM

I'm helping my friend dig a huge hole under her porch in a small space where they kept logs in for many years. The house is pretty old. I'm guessing at least 50 years old and my friend and i spend 3 hours there when we work. We're most likely going to work 2 days a week. Is there a chance that their might be asbestos in that space? How can we check, what can we do to get rid of it, and is it safe to live in that underground room we're planning to build when we finish digging the hole?

you're not very likely to find asbestos there....it was used as an insulator, much lilke fiberglass is used today...the guy above me is thinking of lead in old paint chips.however, it would be a ver good idea to wear breath masks with fine particle filtration, so that you diminish your overall risk. If you ARE exposed to asbestos, then there is a very good chance you will get mesothelioma, a cancer of the pleural lining (surrounds the lungs) that is relatively untreatable.

It was used as insulation in homes. And you don't insulate a porch. You insulate exterior walls of a home and the attic. There shouldn't be anything under the porch. But wear dust masks anyway, it may be damp under there and you don't want to inhale anything growing under there.
