Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by a recessive allele located on the X chromosome.

Women can be carriers of DMD but usually exhibit no symptoms because they carry only one affected X chromosome. DMD primarily affects boys, who inherit the disease through their mothers. So if we do the Punett Square there is a 25% chance of having a boy with DMD if you are a carrier.

Recessive in genetics means that it is a trait that will not show up unless both parents have the gene.Dominant means only one parent need have the gene for it to show up in the child. Therefore since MD is recessive then both parents must carry the trait, but not outwardly have it, yet will pass it on to their child and it will be seen.
