Default What is the gene responsible for causing Duchenne Muscualr Dystrophy? - 12-16-2008, 12:45 AM

I've already asked a similar question, but i don't think i was being specific enough. I know it gets passed down through females, but only affects males. What i WANT to know is what gene is it exactly?

X-linked recessive disease, but to find exactally what gene, you need to get a genome done on the male who has it, and his mother. It can affect more than one chromosome since it is a multi-stage disease. The answer below is incorrect because Dystrophin is a protein. NOT A GENE.

Dystrophin gene, is the cause of both Duchenne and Becker's Muscular dystrophy... and certainly because it is X-linked it will only be found on the x chromosome and you know the rest...hope this helps.

The dystrophies are caused by mutations of genes involved in muscle structure, with the gene for the dystrophin protein being the most prominent one. The dystrophin gene is located on the X chromosome.
