Default Nutrition facts problem please help!? - 02-09-2009, 11:53 PM

My dad and my mom were having a discussion today.

Is the "Total Fat" and "Saturated Fat" on a nutrition fact based on the volume of the item being consumed or the quantity?

Ex. Cheesecake 1 slice=50 percent saturated fat.
My dad says that even if you cut the cheesecake in half, the fat will still be 50 percent because of its' volume. My mom says it will be 25 percent because you'll have half of a slice.

Your mom is right. It cuts the calories down Thessaly cutting the saturated fat down as well. Its not like beer which if you dump half a beer out its still going to be 5% alcohol and not 2.5%.

Nutrition sheets will usually have the details for both a weight amount of the product and "1 serve"

If it says that 100 grams of your cheese cake contains 50% fat it means that 50% of the calories come from fat. If you have a smaller portion you will have overall less fat due to less calories but 50% of the calories will still be from fat.

The fat content is always based on weight.

Half a slice of cheesecake will still contain 50% saturated fat. So if a slice of cheesecake weighs x gm it will contain x/2 gm of saturated fat and half a slice of cheesecake weighing x/2 gm will contain x/4 gm of saturated fat.

The percentage of saturated fat remains the same at 50% but the actual amount gets smaller if you keep reducing the amount of cheesecake. A tiny bit of cheesecake weighing x/10 gm would only contain x/20 gm of saturated fat.
