If a country has increasing rates of obesity and people being overweight, what should the government do to try to help their population get healthier?

Place taxes on unhealthy foods. Things like fast food, soda, and dessert foods should be taxed heavily so people learn to see them as an occasional luxury item rather than as an everyday thing to eat. The money earned from the tax revenue can be used to help lower the prices of some healthier foods in poorer areas. This would also have the added benefit of lowering health care costs, since overweight people are among the most expensive to insure.

As opposed to oppressive taxation, a government could work towards educating the public about healthy lifestyles. A good start would be to educate the people about the very direct connection between excessive carbohydrate intake and obesity. Even fast food can be made to have fewer carbohydrates very easily which would encourage the masses to be able to lose weight which is all the government can really feasibly do. It just turns into a question of vinegar or honey.

And as a side note, government subsidies rarely, if ever, work at reducing the long term price of a good.

The only thing that a government can do is educate individuals. Besides they can add some more taxes to unhealthy food. Apart from that healthier substitutes can be promoted in the market.

In the end- you have the liberty, you have the choice and its your body that suffers.

Lowering child obesity may have a lot to do with strengthening unhealthy food regulations and school regulations. A study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics notes that there appears to be a strong connection between having tighter unhealthy food regulations and having fewer children stricken with obesity.
