I'm truly sorry to say this, Melissa, but fast food, while a good scapegoat, is not a direct cause of obesity in any country. Fast food can be made into a healthier lifestyle choice with just a few modifications that all revolve around lowering carbohydrates such as replacing the soda or other beverage with water and taking off one of the buns from a burger. It may sound ridiculous, but it's shown to work on the diet side. Of course some physically activity will need to be paired to this.
To directly answer the question, obesity became a problem in America due to the poor teaching system in the household and even in government. Children are taught that sugar is a reward, which is a main factor in a cacophony of chronic health problems, obesity included. The government tells us all that fat and cholesterol are bad while fiber and other "good carbohydrates" are good for us and our waistlines. The truth is that in weight loss, there are no good carbohydrates and robbing us of fat and cholesterol reduces our energy, keeps our mental states foggier, slows our healing, and robs our hormones from our blood.
