Default What type of job is suitable for people with obsessive compulsive disorder? - 12-17-2008, 09:44 PM

I have obsessive compulsive disorder, and often get fired. My symptoms is that I keep on checking things over and over again. For example, I keep on checking the door lock and light switch over and over again to see if it locked properly, so that I get a right feeling that it closed properly.what kind of job do you think is suitable for me? If you have obsessive compulsive disorder what kind of job you have?

detectiveever watch the tv show"mr.monk"?well he has ocd so he's a great detectiveI'm not joking here, if you have ocd it's good for you to be a detective because then you won't miss a thing or you'll see things people tend to skip

The one job that does instantly spring to mind for myself, for your symptoms of your OCD, is something along the lines of an event organizer. The reason for my view is that, within that kind of line of work, obviously everything would need to be perfect, the event would need to be a secure one, and so constant checkings of everything being secure and perfect would aid to performance in such a line of work.

I have severe OCD, and am an Organizational and Cleaning Freak! I think most of us with OCD, are huh?Like you, I too, would get fired, time and again, because my OCD behaviors were continually affecting my performance at work.....it's very hard, and can be limiting. But, I choose to use the positive and productive qualities common to OCD, such as perfectionism, being overly organized, observant, being an expert list maker, writing, and helping others organize their lives. Two perfect careers for people suffering from OCD may be -1. A Cleaner (if you are a cleaning nut, like me!)2. A Professional Organizer or Life Coach3. A Detective4. An EditorI understand it may feel a little unfair at times, but choose to embrace the beneficial OCD behaviors, that set you apart from those without the disorder!!!

You can do any job you want to. There are heaps of treatment options for OCD (many that don't involve medications too). Checking doors are locked and lights are off...maybe security guard?? Book editor?? What kind of job do you want? You could start your own business, that way you can't get fired!! (unless you fire yourself!)

First thing, you have a mental condition that is causing you to get fired, if you really wanted to, jobs can't fire you over a mental condition such as OCD nor can they refuse to hire you knowing you have a condition such as OCD. You could get unemployment until you find another job for your condition considering they fired you for unlawful causes. I know you can't live off that, just a suggestion. Anything that goes well with you though. I saw detective, lol, not bad. I saw accountant, you could go into management somewhere, that way you know everything will be right with you having to check things over and over again and you would even probably be more successful in the employees you hire.

I'm 33-years-old and have been living with moderate OCD since the 4th grade. My best advice would be to find a"work-at-home"job where YOU are your own manager. You might consider the following jobs as well:1. Trader in the stock market (online from home, i.e.- Fidelity)2. Online Web News Editor (for your local television station)3. Website design (online from home)4. Social worker5. Broadcast Radio Board Operator / Master Control
