Default Can OCD cause a person to be irritable and intolerant? - 12-23-2008, 01:58 PM

I have been diagnosed with clinical depression, ADHD, and anxiety. My mother also suspects that I have obsessive compulsive disorder, though I have not been formally diagnosed with it. I know that you will probably think that I sound like a monster, but I can be pretty irritable and bitchy and I also don't have any tolerance for stupidity, slowness, or any other nonsense. I have read that irritability can be a characteristic of both depression and ADHD and that people with ADHD are often impatient, but my mother speculates that some of my personality traits could also be caused by OCD. Does anyone here know if OCD could be part of the problem here?

in truth there are no causes, we choose everything. Choice is conscious or unconscious. Practise Zen, it will help

OCD could be part of the problem. If you are complusive about being in control, anything that wrecks that control (slow, stupid people) is likely to make you upset. However, depressed people also have the symptoms you're describing, so it's impossible to say which problem is making you so angry. You probably need to find out if you do have OCD, and then you need appropriate medication to help you get on a more even level. Good luck.

absolutely! This topic fascinates me (I have a mild case of OCD) I read about this stuff alot just because of the human interest factor. Recently there was a special on Oprah with Dr. Oz."The truth about Food"- in it there was a case of a woman who, when she changed her diet (eliminated certain types of food and added more dairy, etc..) her self described irritableness and"bitchiness"went away immensly!! She said she had no tolerence for anything and used the same words as you did. Look into all that you can - I am sure yo uare not a"monster"...and it is very smart of you to question this. Good luck to you!!

Yes. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder involves something that could be described as"the brain taking a life of its own."It's the inability to control certain anxieties and the compulsiveness to perform certain actions. It can get VERY frustrating for someone with OCD when he/she is forced to deal with anything that triggers the brain to assume its own form of control. Most folks with OCD, including me, have an intolerance for germs and certain routines that are starkly different from their own (for example, the way you clean a desk). Folks who seem forceful and unorthodox can be irritating to people with OCD. hope that helps.

OCD usually has not only those, but the need for total control to relieve stress or fear.If it's just an intolerence, it probably isn't. For example. if I don't do my bedtime ritual, then I have nightmares and extremely morbid thoughts. It's uncomfertable, and interupts my daily life alot. It makes me bitchy when my routene gets messed up, but not because of intolerence of the people, just the fear of what will happen if I don't fix it.People become controlling and bitchy to control their surrondings so that they don't freak out with fear or anxiety. This is probably just side effects of your adjustment to meds, (if you have any) and your ADHD. You probably don't have it, but if it's a concern talk to your docter. The test is easy, just a few questions about routenes and such. Hope this helps.

Yes......I experienced it first hand in my ex-husband's (#2) personality. It was extremely difficult for me to accept as he projected it towards me and my children. After 5yrs, I walked away.
