Default What's a good alternative to milk for diabetics with osteoporosis? - 12-15-2008, 08:05 PM

My mom just found out that she has osteoporosis. I know that drinking milk with help this condition but she also has diabetes. What would be a good alternative to milk in this case?

Soy milk plain and simple.. close to the taste of milk. And unless she has allergies regular milk (skim or 2%) does not affect Diabetes

There are other sources of calcium in the diet (a dietition or a dietetic food website will have lists of foods - broccoli I believe is one).Over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements (especially the less expensive brands) often have the wrong kind of calcium for proper body absorbtion. Your doctor should be able to recommend or prescribe a quality brand, and/or start her on a medication specifically for osteoporosis (like boniva).

I just recently switched to Soy Milk with calcium supplement. Just watch the types out there and make sure it is not sweetened with SUCROSE.
