Default What is the best way of supporting an abused child? - 01-07-2009, 01:17 AM

My wife and I are in the process of fostering/adopting a child and we have been told that the child may have been sexually abused. The child is displaying inappropriate sexual behaviour (this is a VERY young child) to the point where she can not be left unsupervised around other children. We are committed to this child who is otherwise well-behaved and want to give her a the loving and secure home she has never had, but we have no idea how to support this child or get her the help that she needs.Time and money are no object here but we need to know what we could or should do about this. How do you stop this behaviour? How do you talk to a 6 year old about sex and what is sexually appropriate? Are there any specialists in this area that we can take her to? Any advice anyone has about this would be great!

Get her into the right counseling, and you need family counseling. Someone who you are dealing with now should be helping you with this.

Ask the child how do they feel and what exactly do you want mommy or daddy to do concerning their negative experience.

When it comes to these kind of things, there are many things you can do.For starters, you can take her to a psychologist. Getting professional help is always the best option and action. Secondly, you can start doing little things at home that'll make her understand acceptable social conducts.Like, teach her what is accepted by society through things such as stories, etc. Like one of those once upon a time story with a moral lesson at the end. It may not seem much, but a child at that age is easily influenced. It'll help her understand what is okay and what is not.

You talk openly and honestly. I told my then 5 yr old that it was not appropriate to touch herself in the living room while watching cartoons. I explained masturbation, and that it is a private thing and she needs to close her bedroom door if she wants to do it, because it's not appropriate for others to see it. She told me what time that she closed her door because she was proud she was following the rules. She is now 7, and she doesn't do it at all. I imagine she was just curious about her body when she was 5, because that's way to young. Using the same open method, talk to your kid and let her know what is and isn't appropriate so that she can unlearn some of the stuff she learned. Teach her to respect her body and that it belongs to her and only her.

It is important to take some form of counseling and integrating it into the child's life. Neglecting the experiences or not helping them channel these things through a proper outlet can be detrimental in nature.
