You have asked a broad question. It was estimated in l997 that there were 1.63 U.S. and 20 million survivors of polio worldwide. But since polio was like the plague to those in the 40's and 50's no one will ever no how many cases went unreported and untreated. Picture the small villages all over the world and even the small towns in America where the children just got the flu and died or were sick for a time, only about 1 to 10% of those who did get polio were paralyzed. You would have to know each year and how many people were in each country and how many polio cases to figure a percentage!I am posting some articles that will help you answer your question. Our organization helps support those who suffer the after effects of polio, now called Post Polio. They have found that 10 to 40 years after recovery from polio the neurons in the spine start dying and the brains messages to the muscles do not transmit it's signals and our ability to use our limbs decreases.Nigera and Africa are now the worst countries that still have polio outbreaks although there are others. The battle of eliminating polio in third world countries is not over as they still use the live vaccine on the children which allows some to still get polio. We still have a few minor outbreaks in the U.S. but they do not like to make them public.Fiksdal, Presidentwww.ippso-world.org
