i'm almost certain that there was no such thing as restless leg syndrome on ly a few years ago and now it's in my psychology book!!! actually there is a whole lot of stuff in there that i never heard about a few years. does anyone else notice this or am i going crazy??i understand that it can be made up to sell more meds but why is it in my psy 101 book?? is this a condition that is now serious enough that it will be forever taught to the future generation of people?
You are not going crazy. With every new disorder, there is a new medication to be sold and thus profited from. Many of these disorders which are managed with medication, are actually merely a list of symptoms, with no pathology. The drug industry is a thriving industry, so it helps to keep labeling symptoms as disorders, and then prescribe medications which deal with them. If they can start calling things that everyone experiences a disorder, then it's a guarantee that the pharmaceutical corporations will gain major profit.
It is just another advertising ploy to get people to buy some way expensive drug that Medicare or Insurance will pay. Probably about ten people in the world have some real problem with this malady. But, they will force it on us. Soon, 20% of the population will believe they have it. Also, see acid reflux disease, erections lasting more than four hours, etc., ad nauseum.
my entire childhood i asked my parents, teachers, doctors, why do i have an uncontrollable urge to move my legs at night? no one had a clue. then one day i see commercials for medication for it. never took any medication for it though. and doctors sure didnt know what to tell me.
