Default How long can someone ignore schizophrenia? - 10-12-2009, 11:07 PM

I had an prolonged episode of auditory hallucinations in my early 20's. Mostly like a drunken buddy and this was during my heavy drinking period. I sobered up and the voices stopped as well. I assumed that the 2 were connected. I am in my early 40's now and I have been hearing nasty and aggressive voices for about 6 months now. I just lost my job and Jack will not stop harassing me about how everyone I know would be better off if I killed myself. This isn't true. I don't have insurance so that can't help my wife. Maybe just relieving her of my burden. I don't know. He doesn't stop and I am too scared to be labeled "crazy".

schizophrenia isn't being crazy so don't label yourself as that! It might not be schizophrenia.. There are plenty of reasons why you hear voices.. Just go to the doctor and if you have to got schizophrenia.. They have tablets that can control it all! So just go and doctors and take it from there! You need to get whatever going on sorted before it gets any worse! Good luck and wish you best of luck!

Auditory Hallucinations can be a sign of schizophrenia or many other mental health issues. It's also fairly normal for mental health issues to go hand-in-hand with substance abuse (it's called Co-Occurring Disorders.) At a glance, I'd say that increases in the stresses of your day-to-day life might have brought back some symptoms of a mental health issue that you experienced earlier in life. It doesn't necessarily mean you were ignoring the symptoms, just that they weren't there because you weren't going through as much.
I'd advise you to search out a a mental health treatment facility and go in for a mental status exam, since finances are most likely an issue, you might be able to look through your state government for either a state or nonprofit organization that offers free or discounted services. I wouldn't worry about being labeled "crazy", thanks to HIPAA law, the organization that tests you couldn't give out the results or else they'd be in trouble. Long story short, you could go in, get help, and be back to normal, which I'm sure your wife would appreciate much more than harming yourself.

You should NOT ignore it any longer. Stress may have triggered the return, but schizophrenia does NOT just go away. Now, here is the good news. You can get medication that will either stop the voices completely or reduce them significantly. But after you do get a medication never stop taking it because as I said, it does not go away. But if your medication has side affects that you can't stand, ask your doctor for something else. There are lots of melds on the market. You just have to find one that works best for you.

This is not something to ignore. Schizophrenia with the time of hallucinations you are having is very dangerous. It is also treatable with medication. It does not mean that you are "crazy". Please go to the nearest psychiatric emergency room and tell them what has been happening. You need immediate treatment.
