Default Can you be placed in a mental hospital for self injury? - 12-17-2008, 07:41 AM

If a teenager is not suicidal, though has been in the past, and has never been diagnosed with anything (but could possibly have depression), can they be admitted to a mental hospital just for self injury?

if you are brought to a screener and they think that you are a significant danger to yourself or others, than they can admit you into the hospital. not only that but if your parents say you need to be admitted than they can have you admitted.

Yes. A person that is intentionally inflicting injury on themselves will be admitted as a 5150. This is the same thing that a person that tries to commit suicide will be admitted with. I was admitted for intentionally burning myself.

Yes, they could if they think you could die from your actions.

yes .. its called self-injuries behaviors. Its another form of depression and suicide. Its a form of mental health issues thats going on and needs to be addressed quickly. This person is crying out for help and doesn't know how to ask for it, and is releasing the hate, anger, fear, pain through cutting or whatever it is"they"are doing.I have known someone in my life who has done this and speaking from personal experience I know exactly what this can lead to if this is not dealt with quickly. Have this friend talk to a professional soon.

I've been inpatient a lot for bipolar disorder, and every time I'm there, there are some teens there on a 72 hour hold for cutting. The hospital's OK tho,if you are the teen. You see a psychiatrist and a counselor&they give you a med workup. you go to classes too. If you are mostly under control, outpatient may be enough. It depends on the teen. The ones I saw were very irresponsible and had a real attitude, and thus needed more than outpatient. (they didn't want to get better).

You can be put into a mental hospital for self injury because you are harming yourself. That is a form of mental illness that should be treated...
