Default is it possible to be in denial about self injury? - 12-26-2008, 04:11 AM

i cut myself with an utility knife and scratch myself with a safety pin. i also hit myself to cause bruising and mercilessly pick on my scabs. yet when i hear the term self injury it doesn't feel like it's referring to me. it feels like it's not my problem even though rationally it is. am i in denial?also, some of my friends just figured out that i do this and they are being very supportive but i'm sure it is very hard on them. what can i do to make it easier on them?

I believe it is just like a addiction to a drug. This is not o.k. to do this to yourself, it could become fatal at some point, especially the cutting. Maybe you could talk to someone that could give you ideals on how to avoid such actions to hurt yourself.

It sounds like self injury is definitely a term that applies to you. You are probably cutting / bruising yourself in order to deal with pain that you are feeling. However, cutting is dangerous and you need to stop harming yourself. You should talk to a counselor. They can help you to learn better ways to deal with your pain, and you will feel better just having someone to talk to. I'm sure that they can help you with dealing with your friends too.
