Default New Sunscreen Regulations as of 2011! - 11-01-2011, 02:14 AM

I keep up to date with articles written by a local doctor, Dr. Julie Chen (her company is MakingHealthyEZ). Dr. Julie Chen is a physician who specializes in integrative medicine.

I was very surprised to hear that the FDA released new labeling guidelines for sunscreen on June 14, 2011. I don’t think I would have heard this information had I not read her article…stuff like this doesn’t seem to get much publicity or media attention, unfortunately.

So what are the new regulations? Manufacturers of sunscreen will not be labeling products above SPF 50 anymore because there is no evidence that any product greater than SPF 50 offers significant additional protection.

Most interesting: sunscreens can no longer be labeled with the words “waterproof,” “sweatproof,” or “sunblock” because these terms overstate the effectiveness of the products and provide consumers with a false impression of what sunscreens are truly capable of doing.

Sunscreens are still allowed to claim “water resistant” but must clarify if it is effective for 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating.

I thought this information would be helpful to pass along because I know there are many people unaware of this change.
