The reason for sids is unknown and there's probably no correlation.

A crib mattress should be firm not soft, if it feels softer than a normal crib mattress then you should get a new one and just get rid of that one without your aunt knowing if you are worried about hurting her feelings.

The softer the mattress the higher the risk for sids. Once baby can roll on his/her tummy it becomes a problem. I wouldn't worry about being rude and giving it back- better to be safe than sorry.

You should always have a firm crib mattress. I would definitely buy a new one. But, you could always save the one your Aunt gave you for a toddler bed. It doesn't matter much then when they are older.

I think that you should get a new mattress, not only for the sids issue but because of all the bacteria that an old mattress carries. I understand not wanting to be rude, but I think the health of your infant is more important. Maybe you can repurpose the mattress for something else like one your older child plays on.

No, it does not increase the chance of sids. The mattress is fine.
