Default What does an abnormal thyroid test mean? What does the thyroid do? - 12-20-2008, 04:43 PM

I had a blood test done last week and it came back abnormal for the thyroid. The doctor put me on a medicine called Synthroid for it. If someone can tell me in simple terms, I would appreciate it!My tests showed the following - TSH level - 5.551 and my PTH, intact was 74.1, which seems to be extremely high.

It means you either have hypothyroidism which is treated medically . If there is an insufficient production of thyroid hormone treatment will be given in pill form which can be taken daily. Hyperthyroidism is also treated by medical means but may recquire surgery to remove the thyroid gland. Seeing that the doctor gave you pills to take i gather that you have hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland regulates the metabolism in your body .

Your thyroid gland is one of the endocrine glands, which make hormones to regulate physiological functions in your body. The thyroid gland manufactures thyroid hormone, which regulates the rate at which your body carries on its necessary functions. The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck, below the larynx (voice box) and just above your clavicles (collarbones). It is shaped like a"bow tie,"having two halves (lobes): a right lobe and a left lobe joined by an"isthmus.". You can't always feel a normal thyroid gland.Diseases of the thyroid gland are very common, affecting millions of Americans.

Thyroid gland is one of our body endocrine glands....... The function of this gland is to produce and secrete thyroid hormone....Thyroid hormone is important in regulation of human body metabolism. And it is also imporatant to regulate the level of Calcium in the blood.Abnormal thyroid test can be diagnosed as Thyrotoxicosis ( increase function ). reason for thyrotoxicosis maybe tumor of the gland, radiaton etc.decrease function = hypothyroidism.Synthroid = supplemental therapy in decreased function of thyroid gland.function of synthroid = increases metabolic rate of body tissues, which is need for normal growth and maturation.
